What Is The Right Time To Use A Weight Belt? Use a Weightlifting or Powerlifting belt during heavy sets at or above 80 percent of your one-rep maximum. Use your belt for spinal support during heavy squatting and deadlifts. Lifts that usually require heavy lifting, and therefore a weight belt, include cleans, snatches and jerks. Free standing overhead lifts, like standing shoulder presses, also warrant the use of a weight belt.
