Regular Barbell and Dumbbell Plates are not to be confused with Olympic plates. Regular plates feature a 1” center hole as opposed to a 2” center hole in Olympic plates. This means that only barbells, dumbbells or certain types of plate loaded gym equipment with 1” diameter plate sleeves can utilize this type of plate. Most regular plates are used for adjustable dumbbell handles and weight lifting bars in the home.
What type of regular plates are available? Regular barbell and dumbbell plates are all very similar except when it comes to the coating. Most are purchased painted in black or gray enamel. Chrome is available for a bright, high end look. And for those that want to protect their floors and other equipment when the plates are dropped, there is rubber coated. Plate sizes start at 1.25 lbs. each and graduate up to as heavy as 50 lbs. for some styles. Plates can be purchased by the pair or by the set starting at 162.5 lbs. going as high as 312.5 lbs.. Purchasing a plate package is a great way to save money and to provide all the weight needed if you have multiple bars and machines they will be used on.
What specific products are regular plates compatible with? Regular plates with a 1” center hole are used with adjustable dumbbell handles and star-lock dumbbell handles with a 1” sleeve. Weight bars with this same 1” diameter sleeves use these plates to perform barbell exercises such as bicep curls and bench presses. Leg extension / leg curl attachments and bicep curl attachments found on weight benches used in homes also accept this type of plate. Did you know that regular plates are also used in commercial gyms to build out Pro-Style dumbbells and barbells?
