back / ham / glute benches
Hyperextension Benches, Roman Chairs and Glute Hamstring Developers - Developing a strong posterior chain is essential in balancing muscular development and strength to prevent injury. Specially designed workout benches such as hyperextension benches, Roman chairs and glute hamstring developers, or “GHD”, target the hamstrings, glutes and muscles of the lower back. The hyperextension bench, or back extension bench, is set on an angle, usually around 45 degrees, and features a thigh pad and ankle roller that are adjustable in height to accommodate users of all different sizes. The hyperextension bench is the easiest of all the back exercise benches to enter and exit. Roman chairs are a simplified version of a glute hamstring bench that feature a thigh pad and adjustable leg rollers which keep the body in a horizontal position throughout the exercise creating a higher level of challenge than the angled back extension bench. The GHD is a very popular exercise bench commonly seen in CrossFit boxes and commercial gyms. Like the Roman chair, the GHD puts the trainee in a horizontal position targeting the hams, glutes and lower back. The glute ham bench includes a footplate with both top and bottom foot rollers that adjust horizontally and vertically for optimal support and customization. The thigh pad of the GHD is typically half moon shaped for better range of motion and a better stretch at the bottom of the exercise. Most GHD’s will have front mounted assist handles and some, such as the Legend Fitness 3214 Pro Series GHD, will even have band pegs for those who prefer resistance bands over holding dumbbells or plates for added resistance.
