Installation tips for your rubber flooring - One of the first steps in installing rubber flooring in your home, studio or club is to calculate how many square feet of material you'll need. If your room is a simple square or rectangle this is pretty straight forward. Multiply the length times width and this will be your square footage. If your space is a weird shape and includes obstacles such as staircases and columns, call an IRON COMPANY® rep to assist you in working out the floor plan. Either way, make sure to order a little more than you need, usually around 10% more, to allow for cutting and even a mistake or two.

Once the rubber is delivered move it to the location where it will be installed and unroll it. This will help remove the curl, or memory, making for an easier installation and will also give the rubber time to acclimate. The acclimation process of rolled rubber flooring is important and you should allow approximately 24-hours for this. Rubber not allowed to acclimate properly before cutting can result in expansion or shrinkage after installation that could have an effect on the aesthetics or performance of the floor.

Cutting your flooring can be done by one person with a few basic tools. A razor knife is key and will allow for easier cutting producing cleaner edges. To make sure your lines are straight, especially when going against walls, use a chalk line or a straight edge. A little known rolled rubber flooring installation tip is to use WD-40 to occasionally lubricate the blade so that there is less buildup of friction as you cut.

Double sided seaming tape, or carpet tape, can be used to adhere each rubber sheet to wood or concrete sub-floors. Making sure your sub-floor is totally free of dirt and debris is paramount. Use tape around the perimeter, down the middle and underneath seams to maximize adhesion. There are two reasons to use tape when installing your rubber flooring. The first is cost. Tape can be much more cost efficient than liquid adhesive. The second reason is some people may want to pull up their floor and move it to another location at a later date. This is common in strip malls and other locations occupied by training studios. Liquid adhesive is much more permanent but the bond is superior. This material is spread onto the sub-floor with a trowel, similar to installing ceramic tiles, at which time the rubber sheets are laid on top. A heavy floor roller can be used to remove air pockets and make sure all rubber is making contact with the adhesive covered sub-floor. An installation consultation is recommended after purchase.
