Detecto 448 Mechanical Physician Scale with Height Rod, Wheels, and Handpost
The Detecto 448 is a pound-reading eye-level mechanical physician scale equipped with an integrated height rod, rear transport wheels, and a handpost. It measures weight up to 450 lbs. in 4 oz graduations and operates without batteries, an electrical outlet, or electronic setup.
Pound-Only Eye-Level Weigh Beam
Model 448 is configured specifically for weight measurement in pounds. Its die-cast mechanical beam is marked on both sides, allowing the measurement to be viewed from either side of the scale.
To obtain a weight reading, the operator moves the large and small poises until the beam pointer balances within the trig loop. The eye-level beam keeps the poises and measurement markings within convenient viewing range.
Integrated Height Rod
The Detecto 448 includes a height rod for recording standing height at the same station used for weight measurement. This distinguishes it from base scale models that provide weight measurement only.
Rear Transport Wheels
Rear wheels allow staff to reposition the unoccupied scale for room changes, cleaning, or storage. The wheels are intended for controlled relocation rather than movement while a person is standing on the platform.
After moving the scale, place it on a firm, level surface and confirm that the platform and column are stable before use.
Handpost for Additional User Contact
Model 448 includes a handpost that provides an additional contact point while a person steps onto, stands on, or leaves the platform. The handpost is a model-specific feature and should not be implied on other Detecto physician scales unless expressly included.

The scale uses mild-steel construction with a powder-coated finish. Its platform measures approximately 14.75 by 10.75 inches and includes a removable black platform cover for routine cleaning.
The eye-level column places the weigh beam above the platform while preserving access to the height rod and handpost. Plan adequate surrounding space for entry, exit, operation, and controlled movement of the scale.

Cleaning and Routine Inspection
Use manufacturer-approved, nonabrasive cleaning methods for the platform cover, painted steel, weigh beam, wheels, height rod, and handpost. Do not submerge the scale or spray liquid directly into the mechanical components.
Regularly inspect the platform, column, handpost, wheels, height rod, beam, poises, and pointer for looseness, damage, misalignment, or abnormal movement. Remove the scale from service when its condition differs materially from normal operation.
