Weightlifting Bars – Weightlifting bars, or Olympic bars, are the gold standard of resistance training equipment. They come in many shapes and sizes but are most commonly available in 7’ Power Bars for powerlifting lifts such as the bench press, squat and deadlift and 7’ Olympic bars for Olympic style lifts like the snatch and clean and jerk.

Power Bars – If you are a powerlifter or your weight training includes the bench press, deadlift and squat, a powerlifting bar is the tool of choice. What is a power bar? Power bars can differ from Olympic bars in several ways. Power bars often include a very coarse diamond knurling pattern, including center knurling, that will hold plenty of lifting chalk and gives the lifter maximum grip on very heavy lifts. Powerlifting lifts don’t require quick movements like Olympic lifting so high quality bushings are preferred over faster spinning needle bearings. Power bars are usually thicker in diameter and will include little to no “whip” compared to an Olympic bar. Shop IRON COMPANY for the latest in power bars and IPF spec power bars including the Kirk Karwoski Approved power bar, IRON COMPANY Midwest Power Bar, USA Made Iron Grip weightlifting bar and the American Made Ivanko OBX-20kg.

Olympic Bars – Olympic weightlifting lifts, including the snatch and clean and jerk, are two lifts that require quickness and momentum. Olympic weightlifters prefer an Olympic weightlifting bar that has whip, or “oscillation”, which allows them to take advantage of the upward momentum this bending in the bar provides. A medium diamond knurling pattern is common in Olympic bars but center knurling is not. Olympic lifts are quick making bearings, such as needle bearings, a preferred method of spin for the bar sleeve. Many Olympic bar manufacturers adhere to IWF specs including bar length, diameter, weight, color coding and knurl marks. Shop IRON COMPANY for Olympic bars including the 5150 Olympic bar, York Elite Olympic Training Bar and the American Barbell Performance Training Bar.

Regular Weightlifting Bars – At IRON COMPANY we define “regular weightlifting bars” as non-Olympic bars. A regular bar will have 1” diameter sleeves that utilize a regular barbell collar, such as spring collars, or if the sleeve is threaded they will use a threaded barbell collar, such as a star-lock. A 1” diameter sleeve also means that regular barbells and dumbbell handles will only accept regular weight plates, or “pancake” plates, with a 1” diameter center hole. Just like Olympic bars, regular weightlifting bars include a variety of configurations including straight bars, curl bars and tricep bars.

What Type Of Weight Lifting Bar Is Best For Me?  Depending on the user, the kind of bar that is selected can depend on many things. Budget, fitness goals, other equipment you may already own, space, etc. Chances are if you are purchasing a weight bar for home use you will want to look at our “Regular Bar” selection. They accept the smaller weight plates with the 1” center hole and are compatible with most home gym equipment such as bench presses and preacher curl benches. For the home gym lifter that has his sights set on packing on the muscle, we recommend an Olympic bar as it will be compatible with squat racks, Olympic bench presses and can be used for mass building Olympic style lifts. Naturally the Olympic straight bars, curl bars and triceps bars work well in any commercial club or CrossFit box. So take a minute to browse through our wide selection of bars to find the one best suited for your needs.
